Bone Marrow Donor Drive, August 9th

There is a bone marrow donor drive on Saturday, August 9, downtown at Boise City Hall, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. It's FREE and all it takes is a cheek swab. St. Al's closed their donor donation this spring and St. Luke's is closing in September. People can hit the Farmer's Market and then go to the event!

Little Black Dress Club member Kimberlee Bratcher says, "In 1990, my best friend and I road-tripped to Sacramento, California to the nearest bone marrow registry site. Though it’s been 18 years, I’ve never been called to donate. But the registry has kept track of me through 8 different moves and I wait for the day that I’m called to potentially save a life."

Little Black Dress Club in the St. Luke's Women's Fitness Celebration

Little Black Dress Club has created a team for the St. Luke's Women's Fitness Celebration. Our team is open to anyone who would like to do the event with Little Black Dress Club, member or not!

To participate, go to http://www.active.com/event_detail.cfm?event_id=1540465&action=ct and select "regular team registration." On the next page, select "Little Black Dress Club" from the team pull-down menu. We all need to be signed up by Sept. 5th.

On event day we will be meeting on the steps of the Old Post Office on the corner of 8th and Bannock, time to be determined (we'll send out an email to team members). We hope you can join us for this fun event!

Little Black Dress Club Lends an "Extra Hand" for ALS

This past Saturday Little Black Dress Club members had the privilege of doing a volunteer project for Sharon, a wonderful woman with ALS who needed a little help around the house. We washed windows inside and out, and planted some pretty, colorful flowers in the yard.

Thanks to Sharon's awesome grandson Jason for all of his help, and to Fred Meyer for providing the flowers at half-price. Thanks also to Sharon's neighbors Jim and Travis, who came over to fix Jason's basketball hoop!

Little Black Dress Club Update!

We are so excited about all of the community interest in Little Black Dress Club! It's shaping up to be a great group of women who know that fun and philanthropy go hand-in-hand!

At this point we are not scheduling regular "membership" meetings, per se. Instead, the Steering Committee is in the process of planning regular volunteer and social events for the next few months, starting with a team in the Komen Boise Race for the Cure on May 10th (see previous blog posting for details). We will email and blog as we pin down the details on other upcoming events, so keep an eye out for updates-there is some fun stuff in the pipeline!

And remember: participation in events is not a requirement for membership in LBD-participate as much as you want in whichever events interest you!

Race with us - for fun & for a cure!

Did you miss the LBD Kickoff Party? Or did you have so much fun you want to join us again?

Well, you may know that one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. What you may not know is that you can help these women and thousands of others in the fight against breast cancer.

On May 10, 2008, The Little Black Dress Club will be participating in the Komen Boise Race for the Cure with a great team of dedicated people. The money raised through the Race will fund vital education, screening and treatment programs for underserved women in our own community and support the national search for a cure.

Join the fight by registering as part of the Little Black Dress Club team or by supporting our efforts by making a contribution. Registrations are due: April 30, 2008, so don't delay!

We need your support! Every step counts!

About Little Black Dress Club

Little Black Dress Club: What It Is

Little Black Dress Club is a Boise-based women’s social giving circle established by Hilarie Engle, Monica Hopkins and Stephanie McCurdy, with assistance from Tracy Bresina and Sydney Sallabanks.

Little Black Dress Club believes that philanthropy is fun and fabulous, and wants every woman to have the opportunity to enjoy being a philanthropist! Little Black Dress Club will offer a way for those who are already philanthropic to increase or streamline their giving, and will also bring new donors into the world of philanthropy.

Little Black Dress Club is a way to connect to our community and form personal bonds with like-minded women. As a group we will learn about giving in general, needs in the community and specific nonprofit organizations. The collective strength of Little Black Dress Club is what will make this new giving circle a powerful and positive force.

The Little Black Dress Club kickoff party is Monday, April 7th from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Falcon Tavern, 780 W. Idaho Street. We hope you will join us for this special hosted evening filled with friends, fun and philanthropy. Little Black Dresses optional!

Little Black Dress Club: How It Works

Contributions from Little Black Dress Club will be invested in an interest-earning short-term (two years) fund in the Idaho Community Foundation. The interest generated is expected to nearly offset the small fee for establishing the fund.

Membership in Little Black Dress Club is a $300 contribution to the fund. This gift can be paid in a lump sum or in quarterly installments of $75 or monthly installments of $25. More information about contributions will be available at the kickoff party.

The membership goal of Little Black Dress Club is to bring together 50 members during its inaugural year, which will translate to a $15,000 giving pool.

Little Black Dress Club will use its fund to award grants to Ada and Canyon County-based nonprofit organizations. Initial plans are to fund three $5,000 grants. However, the funding structure may be flexible depending on the number of members and grant applicants. The Little Black Dress Club Grants Committee will make grant award decisions following grantee applicant presentations to the general membership.

Little Black Dress Club will also host fun and fabulous bi-annual social events that highlight a local nonprofit organization, with a portion of the ticket price going to the selected agency.

Little Black Dress Club: How to Get Involved
